Class Description: We love t-shirts! The t-shirt is the workhorse of a modern wardrobe. It can be dressed up or down depending on accessories and fabric choice. The comfort of knit fabrics and the simplicity of the pattern make the t-shirt the comfort food of garment sewing.
There are 4 patterns to choose from in this class that offer various shapes and styles (3 women’s and 1 men’s). 1. The Plantain t-shirt from Deer and Doe Patterns is a free, downloadable PDF pattern that is slightly flared for a looser fit. Download the pattern at www.deer-and-doe.com and see thousands of samples on Istagram at #plantaintee. 2. This men’s (or boy’s) pattern is a great basic with a fantastic fit. Jalie 2918 will make the man in your life (or you!) wanting to make loads. Download the pattern at www.jalie.com. This pattern will work best if constructed on a serger. Bring your own or use one of ours. 3. New Look 6439 is a wonderful, flowing design to wear with skinny jeans or leggings that features a gathered back and high/low hem. This paper pattern is available at JoAnn’s or Hobby Lobby. 4. (not pictured) McCalls 6964 is a true basic pattern featuring both a round and v-neck (we’ll be making the round neck in class). Many different types of knit fabrics will work well for this pattern.
We will cut out and construct the garment in the class. There is an optional, free pre-class to discuss fit and fabric choice. Students will learn how to attach neckbands and work with sleeves as well as receive tips on sewing with knits on a regular sewing machine and serger. We have both types of machines for your use in class. Students should have experience sewing on a regular machine although need not have had garment-making experience.

The student may, however, be required to have a basic skill or have taken a certification class. For example, for a flat-pattern drafting class one need not know anything about flat-pattern drafting but should have a basic understanding of the sewing machine. Any prerequisites will be listed in the class description.

Instructor Bio: Why I sew: When I think of all the reasons I sew – saving money, getting a good fit, not being limited to what’s in the store, being conscious of how my clothing is produced – the reason above all is that I can be unique. I know that when I choose my own pattern and pair it with a fabric, I will be creating a garment that no one else has. I can also create home goods that are as individual as I am. In a day and age where uniformity is difficult to avoid, creating my own sewn garments is a way to express my voice.
